Building Sustainable Homes with Recycled Materials

Self-sufficient Living in a Well-designed Container Home — photo 2

When it comes to building sustainable homes, finding the right materials is key. That's why so many eco-friendly builders are using recycled materials like shipping containers to build homes. They offer the perfect shape and structure for a home as well as a very sturdy material that can endure anything the elements offer up. This 1,500 square foot home designed by Tomecek Studio, uses shipping containers in their design as well as reduces the home's size. They also implemented green rooftops and photovoltaics for a super environmentally sustainable home. The home was anchored on a rock outcropping that was already present on the building site so that the home can take advantage of the views of the scenery. From the outside, the home looks very modern and stylish with clean lines and a very unique design. From one side of the home, it almost appears to be floating or dangling off the side of the cliff it sits on giving it a lot of architectural appeal. You can also see the different colours of materials used as siding on the home to cover up the metal walls of the shipping containers making it more attractive and helping it fit in with the natural scenery. You can also see a photo of it being lowered onto the foundation by a crane which is how these shipping containers are often placed.

Spacious and Modern Interior Design

Inside, the home is open and super spacious with the main floor holding the living space, and the upper floor is a loft area. They used two shipping containers in a wedge-shaped formation with the centre being the entrance, living and dining space. The living room area is nice and open with exposed shipping container walls for an added touch of industrial style, and you can see that they went with some nice concrete finished floors which really pair well. The living room holds a sofa and chair with the TV and shelf along with the super modern and sleek fireplace off to the side. Right in the same space is the kitchen which features an island that can be used for dining with two stools pulled up to it. The kitchen space is all against one wall with lots of wooden cabinets and great granite countertops. The cooktop is built into the island with a hood fan above, and the oven is mounted on the wall behind along with the microwave. It also features a dishwasher on one end and then a small desk area with a computer for work. On the other wall in the main living area are two huge garage doors that both open up wide to the deck and show off the amazing views of the valleys below: what a stunning view and an incredible place to live. The deck would be perfect for morning coffee and for evening dinners, or for lounging any time of day.

Innovative Loft Design and Collaboration

The bedroom on the main floor is closest to the living room, and entrance way and has just enough room to fit a bed and essential items. The upper floor is the open loft including a platform bed on sliding tracks so it can be pushed outside on the deck for the ultimate sleeping experience under the stars. This is such an incredible design and build that may just inspire you to want to create your own shipping container house. Tomecek Studio did an awesome job of this design as well as their other shipping container cabin that's featured on their website. The company loves to collaborate with their clients to bring them the best in design and functionality. They also enjoy working with the land the home is going to be built on and see how they can incorporate their home design into the land instead of disturbing to the land itself.
