Introduction to the Stealth Barn Workspace Studio

The Stealth Barn is located on the same site a building called the Ochre Barn, with the idea for the concrete frame shed being to create a separate workspace studio that could also act as a self-contained one-bedroom guesthouse. The renovation for the frame shed was carried out on a tight budget and eventually cost just 42,000 USD to complete. Dividing crosswalls were introduced to work with a prefab timber frame system that helped to keep the costs down. The barn style house was clad with rough sawn wooden fencing planks and treated with an ebony stain system. Openings sit just behind the plane of the exterior cladding, with the timber frame structure continuing behind. This gives the look as though the cladding has been peeled away, especially at night.

Innovative Window Design and Views

The Stealth Barn has horizontal windows that are placed lower than the windows would normally be, which gives views of both the large skies and the flat landscape outside. The windows offer a sequence of views depending on whether you are sitting, standing, or lying down. The barn style house is featured in the Architects' Journal.

Design Details and Functionality

The barn style house is located in Norfolk, England, and was designed by London studio Carl Turner Architects. Clad in black-stained timber, the barn sits perpendicular to a larger brick barn that the architects also designed and converted into a residence. The interior of the Stealth Barn is divided into rooms that allow it to be used as a guest house, although it is also used as a barn, meeting place or studio. The OSB interior surfaces are intended to look like straw bales that fill the barns of several of the farms nearby.

Complementing the Ochre Barn

The Stealth Barn sits next to and complements the Ochre Barn, a large threshing barn that was converted by Carl Turner Architects to a home and studio. This addition was to provide a self-contained space that could also act as a guest house, meeting place or studio, depending on the time of year and the workloads it can also be used as a retreat, creative space or workspace. The barn is placed perpendicular to the existing Ochre barn and provides a more sheltered and casual garden that melts into the fens.

Contrasting Interior and Exterior Design

The Stealth Barn clad in black timer strikes a shadowlike silhouette on the horizon. The modern, clean lines, devoid of fussy detail, fit perfectly with its grassy location. The interior feels the opposite with a warm glow that comes from the OSB, with a look that is reminiscent of the adjacent barns straw bales. Each room in the Stealth Barn has aspects that overlook the fields and offer a sense of protection and warmth. The Stealth Barn is a barn style house is full of inspiration, the contrast between the interior and exterior and how it ties in with its landscape is a lesson for every home design. The contrast between dark and light is beautiful, and the agricultural backdrop provides the perfect setting for this barn style home.
