This modern barn guesthouse is also used as a garage workshop and a workout space. You will love the view from the main floor of this stunning barn style house. The owners of this cabin building had commissioned the architect to do their original home more than 23 years ago, and the architect designed a new stand-alone barn structure on the property to accommodate three uses to include a comfortable guest suite, a workout room, and a large workshop where the husband can restore his vintage cars, bicycles and motorcycles. The owners of this guest house would be a 2,400-square-foot building that would take the form of a classic gambrel-roof barn, so that became the starting point for the design. This cabin building is located in Wilson, Wyoming.

Scenic Location and Design Harmony

The barn style house sits on a 15-acre site that also has a rustic log house at the edge of a lake with scenic views of the Teton Range to both the west and north. The barn style house is situated just off the northeast corner of the existing log house, with the cabin building managing to capture scenic views without having to compromise the views of the main house. The barn style house has a shape that is classic and traditional, and the designers decided to use an unexpected element in the home design, in the form of a glass curtain wall in the fitness/workout area that takes full advantage of the scenic Teton views to the north.

Traditional Materials with Modern Aesthetics

The building materials for the cabin building help to keep with the traditional form of the design and are limited to just two tones of old barn wood, to include gray and brown. The barn style house uses timber and steel trusses on a four-foot module that runs the entire length of the cabin building. The lower level of the barn guest house is dedicated to the workshop garage and the entry, while the upper level of the barn style house, workout room with small kitchen. The interiors of these rooms have a modern aesthetic that complements the barn style house's functional, clean lines.

The barn sits on a remote building site which looks out at the views of the Teton Range, which is part of the Rocky Mountain range. The main house that sits on the property was built twenty years ago was also designed by Carney Logan Burke Architects, based in Jackson, Wyoming.

Unique Roof Design

The shape of the barn style building was decided upon by the owner. It has a gambrel style roof, which is defined by sides that have a shallower slope above a steeper one. Reclaimed hemlock timber came from a sawmill facility in Montana and was used to fabricate the trusses. The architects clad the barn-style house in old grey and brown barn wood, with the grey barn wood coming from corral fencing, and the brown barn wood coming from reclaimed rafters.
