Commitment to Sustainability

The log home company believes in taking care of the environment, and it shows in the green choices that they make. Katahdin Log Homes uses Northern White Cedar for the construction of their log homes. For them it's a good choice since Maine's Aroostook County, where their mills are located, holds one of the largest stands of Northern White Cedar in North America. The wood is abundant, sustainable and a naturally renewable tree.

Green Innovations in Manufacturing

Katahdin Log Homes has a Biomass Boiler that is one of the largest green improvements they have made to their log home manufacturing process. They invested close to $1 million; they have reduced their environmental footprint by not heating with fuel oil, having to truck away thousands of tons of waste sawdust and scrap each year. The log home company has always made it their priority to reduce waste and use as much as they can with the Northern White Cedar logs that arrive in their just-cut state. Because of our strict grading, not every cedar log they purchase is made into log home wall stock. So, they have thought of alternative uses for just about every bit of the log that they bring into their facility.

Steps to Building Your Dream Log Home

When it comes to building your dream log home, there are several steps to achieving your goals. One of the most important steps in your log home planning is choosing the piece of property where you will build your log home. You want your land to complement the design of your log home. Once you have chosen your log home building site, you'll want to ask your log home dealer to review the property with you to determine if there are any topological features that may affect the design of your log home. You also want to make sure that you have chosen the best spot on the property to maximize views and solar exposure.
