The Historical Significance of Barns

The Loft at Bloomsbury Farm is a good example of a barn built with a lean-to on the side for cover on sunny and rainy days and the stables down below with the barn door openings. Barn builds have a long history in North America with the first European settlers that created homesteads in British North America all having barns. Settlers would usually have the main home that they would live in with other structures on the property to house livestock and store wheat, hay and roots to provide food for both the owners and the animals during the harsh winter months. Many of the older barns used old growth lumber to build as that was the wood available on their pieces of land.
