Innovative Use of Space Under a Bridge

When space is limited, make use of the space you have. That's what Fernando Abellanas did when he had the great idea to build a little studio under a bridge in Valencia, Spain. Fernando works as a designer, so his creative mind naturally sees potential wherever he goes. He came up with the idea to put a studio under a bridge because of the lack of space in the city setting. So he saw the spaces under traffic bridges as a great opportunity. He's a self-taught designer and could also be called an inventor after creating this innovative tiny studio design. He created a small unit with a hand crank that moves it along the underside of the bridge from one side to the other. Fernando said that cabins have always been important to him since he was a child. Although not the cabin in the woods like most people would assume, but as a space to retreat to in an urban centre. He equates the hidden studio he created to the way we all used to hide or play under a table or a closet. The way we were able to hide while still being able to hear and see things happening in our environment. There is a level of peace that comes with being hidden in plain sight, that allows you to be in a busy city without feeling too overwhelmed.

Secret Location and Structural Design

While many people have posted about this studio online, the exact location of it is still a secret. He also plans to create more over time but he says they will only remain as long as people don't wreck it or the authorities find it and remove it. The studio space is made from wood and steel all welded and bolted together. The wheels on the top are what connects to the hand crank allowing it to move across the bridge from side to side. There are also panels that open up to reveal the inside of the studio and that close to give privacy. He's set up some shelves, a desk and a chair with some decorations to make it feel more like a home. He also added some blankets just in case he ever wanted to take a nap in the space. The floor is metal and plywood making it strong enough to hold a couple of people. He also made it accessible from one raised incline so that no ladder or steps were necessary. Since he was very young, Fernando has been into handicraft work thanks to his father who allowed the kids to be part of the creation and repair of their own furniture.

Early Influences and DIY Passion

So naturally, he had a keen interest in how things are made. When he was young, he made small furniture items with limited resources just to see what he could make and then he got a job as a plumber when he quit school. Around the age of 26, he became very interested in DIY projects and created his own home and workshop over the course of 3 years. He mainly uses wood, metal and stone since they are the most natural. He'll start a design by simply drawing it out on paper and then getting to it by building the prototype and working out any flaws in the design. For the products he sells, he'll usually start with 10 or 20 units. You can tell that he's very influenced by designs from the 60's and 70's, as well as abandoned buildings, industrial construction, old water reservoirs, tunnels and of course bridges. He eventually wants to make huts all over the place which could be great for the homeless and could possibly be a project some cities could benefit from.
