The city of Cambridge has a world-renowned university, that dates back to the start of the 13th century. Cambridge University has prestigious alumni to include Charles Darwin, Stephen Hawking, and Sir Isaac Newton. Many of Cambridge's Colleges were founded by monarchs, abound with impressive architectural design and resonate with tales of its former students and professors. By the River Cam, you'll find enduring landmarks such as the King's College Chapel and the Mathematical Bridge.

King's College: A Beacon of Architectural Grandeur

Kings College was founded in 1441 by Henry VI and its chapel and Front Court are the sights most people readily associated with Cambridge. There is the spacious Front Court, walled to the north by the Chapel and the west by its Classical 18th-century Gibbs' Building, giving it a real sense of majesty, especially in the evening when the sun catches the William Wilkins' Neo-Gothic screen on the east side. Cambridge's masterpiece is the Kings College Chapel, which was erected in stages from 1446 to 1515 and is held as one of the great works of late Perpendicular Gothic architectural design. The ceiling in Kings College has the largest fan vault in the world, completed in the 1510s, and has the glorious early Renaissance rood screen and stained glass windows that followed later, in the 1530s.

Trinity College: A Legacy of Great Minds

Trinity College was established by Henry VIII in 1546, and his statue is in an ornate niche above the Great Gate. Among Trinity College's alumni are Lord Bryon, Sir Isaac Newton, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. The showpiece of the College is the Great Court, which is claimed to be Europe's largest enclosed court and remodeled by Thomas Nevile, the master of the college at the beginning of the 17th century. On the East Staircase in the northeast corner of the College is where Sir Isaac Newton lived, and at the center of the College is a Renaissance fountain.
