Benefits of Prefab Shipping Container Homes

There are several benefits to prefab shipping container homes. Container homes are eco-friendly. One of the biggest benefits of building a steel container home is that it is environmentally friendly. This is also something which many people agree with and is one of the most common reasons for building a steel container home: its eco-friendly properties.

Recycling Steel Containers

There are around 17 million steel containers in the world, with only about 6 million of these in use. So approximately 11 million steel containers are currently unused and could be converted into steel container homes for people. For each recycled steel container home, you are reusing around 7,700 pounds worth of steel. You are also saving all of the traditional building materials such as wood, bricks, and mortar which don't need to be used.

Environmental Impact

While you could argue that melting down the steel container and recasting the steel into something new is more environmentally friendly, you would be wrong. Recasting the steel requires an incredible amount of energy, and it isn't all that financially viable. This is why there are so many abandoned steel containers in the world.

Off-Site Construction and Delivery

Another great advantage of a steel container home is that it can be built off-site and then delivered to your land ready to move in. This is helpful when you have a plot of land that isn't suitable to build on, and there can be many reasons for this. For instance, the piece of land might not have any electricity, so you couldn't power your welders or power tools there. In this case, you can convert the shipping container at a local workshop and then deliver the finished steel container home to your plot of land.

Off-Grid Living

This is especially common when people want to build off-grid steel container homes. Another great advantage of modifying your steel container at a local workshop is that you don't need to make your steel container water tight straight away. If you were converting the steel container outside, you'd want it to be water tight straight away, so no rain gets inside the steel container. However, converting the steel container inside means you don't need to worry about making the steel container water tight instantly.

Speed of Construction

Steel container homes can be built very fast. One of the best examples of this can be found in the city of Diemen, which is a popular city in Holland. The local college wanted to build additional accommodation for its students, quickly. So the college decided to build a block of steel container homes out of 250 steel containers.

The steel containers were modified in China and then shipped to Amsterdam. In total, around five steel containers were stacked each day. This means that in less than 12 weeks they had successfully built 250 steel container homes. The reason for this is that when you purchase a steel container, you already have the walls, the floor, and the ceiling for your home, you just need to apply insulation and decorate them.
