This Grain Silo Tiny House uses Salvaged Building Materials and Decor

When you think of grain silos you don't typically think of home designs, but this grain silo tiny house will change that.

The charming tiny house design is a 14-foot-round grain silo that came from a ranch just down the road from owner Amy Kleinwachter La Grange, Texas, home. Kleinwachter is a Texas picker who filled the tiny house with her unique finds. Kleinwachter had already built an entire farmhouse design out of salvaged building materials, so she immediately envisioned the grain silo as a unique guesthouse perfect for her 10 acres. Shop Tiny Homes Once the grain silo was hauled over to her 10 acres of land, local contractor Judy Kurtz was enlisted to help sift and pick through Kleinwachters vast inventory of window frames, weathered beadboard, and sheet metal that she had collected over the years. The completed 1,000-square-foot grain silo structure now includes a front porch and a bed/bath extension, which makes it the right-size for friends, family, and guests.

Some of the things you will find in this charming tiny house design include an old Champagne crate that is now used as a footrest with a grain sack-cushion topper.

There is also an antique bleached oak table and a pair of mismatched leather chairs that make for an eclectic sitting area. For the office area, Amy an old floral-stand is used as a floating desk. The best part about giving new life to old treasures is that they come with a backstory, plenty of character and a story to tell. In the tiny house bedroom, you'll find old wood that was salvaged from a nearby historic Texas home and then treated and sealed with a Varathane polyurethane sealant so that guests wouldn't breathe in lead paint. There is a textured wall that pairs well with the wrought-iron queen-sized bed with its new, crisp linens.

You want the look to be organic and not too perfect, but nothing too random either says the owner. In the bathroom of the grain silo tiny house, an old phone nook gets a second life as the flush-mount bathroom shelving. For the wall decor, because it is a grain silo it can be compared to a tin can, with an inherently dark look. When designing the tiny home the owner went through her stash of window options with ample height and width to help maximize the natural light and still work within the constraints of the grain silos circular design. Kleinwachter of dental convinced a friend to buy an old set of dental panes from a dentist’s office years before and was able to buy them back for the bedroom.

The metal awnings over the windows help to bring depth to home design with a rustic flair.
