Madisonville is a small city in eastern Tennessee, home to an eclectic collection of things to see and do.
The city is the birthplace of Estes Kefauver, inviting travelers to visit America's largest underground lake, where you will get a chance to see rare anthodites, colloquially called cave flowers, that look like crystalline chrysanthemums. The following are some of the other things to do in the area during your vacation stay.
The Lost Sea.
Hidden in the underground labyrinth known as Craighead Caverns is The Lost Sea, America's largest underground lake. The caverns are open for tours all year-round except for Christmas Day. The standard tour involves a trek through 3/4 mile of caverns, followed by a ride on the lake in a glass-bottomed boat. The Lost Sea has additional tours like the Flashlight Tour, which extends into the only undeveloped part of the caves, and an overnight tour spent camping out at the caverns.
Estes Kefauver Marker.
The Estes Kefauver Marker was erected by the Tennessee Historical Commission to memorialize this American politician. Kefauver, who was born, raised, and buried in Madisonville, held a seat in the United States Senate and was nominated by the Democratic National Committee to run as vice-president with the presidential nominee, Adlai Stevenson, in 1956. The marker serves to honor his memory and describes his legacy and achievements as a politician.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The park is the most visited in the USA. The park is filled with beautiful forests which lie on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. It is filled with diverse animal and plant life which kids can learn all about, and explore. Whether you are up for an adventure or looking for a relaxing family day out, there will be something for you at this beautiful national park. With over 800 square miles to explore it's no wonder that a popular choice is by car. There are 384 miles of road that allow you to see all the corners of the Smokies, and great books that are perfect to guide you through all the sights.
