Experience the Villa de Austin Townsite Interpretive Area

You'll want to take a closer look inside the Villa de Austin Townsite Interpretive area that seeks to evoke the look and feel of a sample of the village to give visitors, especially school, scout, and youth groups a hands-on learning experience. The log cabin is based on archival and archeological evidence and precedent historic architectural design from similar eras and areas, staff architects from the Texas Historical Commission have drawn a plan for four log houses and two frame structures that represent the appearance of one town lot in about 1830. The log homes were contracted with several log houses and timber builders from different areas in the country. The Farmers Hotel and The Kitchen were both hand-hewn inside and out. The Farmers Hotel had half dovetail notches, and The Kitchen had V-notches.

The Art of Hewing in Log House Construction

In the simplest terms, hewing in log house construction is the process of making a round log flat. Axes are used to remove the extra wood and smooth the surface of the log. At the end of this process, you end up with a flat log at a desired thickness with two natural edges. These hewn logs become the walls of the log cabin. As a passionate craftsman, the log house builder remains an advocate of aesthetic qualities that are achievable only through skilled hand hewing done with an axe.

The Unique Character of Hand Hewn Log Cabins

Hand hewn log cabin buildings are phenomenal because each one possesses an original personality and exudes character. They are warm and fill you with a connection to history and nature. The hewn texture and natural edge of each log create a look and feel that cannot be found in any other building style. Creating an authentic hand hewn log cabin requires a great deal of strength, control, and experience, which is why there is no comparison to the hand hewn quality. Log cabins can range in size and layout according to the owner's lifestyle and needs, but every final design will be a custom creation. There will never be another hand hewn cabin built that matches your own.
