It's pretty incredible, and a little bit funny to know that the smallest house in Great Britain was lived in by a person who was 6 feet and 3 inches tall. The tiny house, also known as Quay House, was lived in by Robert Jones in the 1900s even though it was first built in the 16th century. Apparently, the rooms in the home were too small for him to stand up in and he was actually forced to move out of the tiny home when the city council decided it was too small for people to live in. It wasn't the only house either; there were a number of other homes that were decided to be too small to live in at that same time. However, the house is still owned by Robert's descendants, and it is now a museum of sorts where people can take tours and see what it's like inside the smallest house in Great Britain. The other tiny houses in the area were sadly torn down which makes this one a piece of history, so it's a good thing it's still standing for everyone to see. The local people protested which saved the Quay House from being torn down at one point. They also collected enough money to make it into the tourist attraction it is now.
When Roger Dawson toured the UK in search of The Smallest House in Great Britain, this cute little red house ended up being the one, and it even gained the status in the Guinness Book of Records. The tiny house is located in the Welsh village of Conwy, and from the outside, it just looks like it's a part of the other buildings surrounding it. But once you see inside, you find out that the tiny house is very much on its own, and that it is indeed very tiny. The tiny house has only two cramped rooms which can fit a maximum of four people at a time. People from all over the world have come to see the tiny house for themselves, and there are tours happening daily complete with guides wearing traditional dress. People can pay just 50p for kids and £1 for adults to tour it, and it's worth every penny especially if you love tiny houses. Believe it or not, the home measures just 1.8 metres wide which is only 5.8 feet. Just for comparison, a tiny house on wheels is usually 8.5 feet wide on the inside. Inside this tiny house is also a small living room with pictures from the area throughout history. Then, there is a tiny staircase that leads up to the bedroom which is only 6 feet by 8 feet, but people can't go upstairs because the floor is not stable enough, but they can get a peek of it from the bottom steps.
Apparently, all of the cooking, washing and going to the bathroom would have been done outside of the home. For most people who see the home, it's a real shock to see how people used to live back then. People used to live in much smaller homes that we live in today, especially in North America where most homes are greater than 1,500 square feet. So it's really interesting to see how many people would have lived back in the day. Now, it seems that people are gravitating toward living smaller too, maybe not this small, but for some people, it could actually be doable. Most tiny houses are about 200 square feet to 400 square feet if they are built on trailers, and up to 900 square feet or so if they are built on foundations. Can you imagine living in a home as small as the Quay House?
