Introduction to Waterfall Bay House

The Waterfall Bay House is a beautifully designed home with a gorgeous interior. The home is located in a private bay in the Marlborough Sounds which is in the north of the South Island of New Zealand. It stands on the stunning property surrounded by lush forest in front of the sea which provides a beautiful setting for the home. Bossley Architects did a fantastic job of designing this home, and they also did a wonderful job of maintaining the integrity of the surrounding landscape as well. The exterior of the home is covered in wood which blends right in with the natural surroundings. The home seems like it fits right in there as though it's been there for years before. It's set close enough to the water but just far enough back to have some great privacy. The home is a two storey design that has the living area on the upper level and the guest rooms below. This might seem like a reversed layout, but it could allow for more privacy and shade in the bedrooms being on the main level and then better views for the living areas on top. There is one bedroom on the upper level though which is in line with the trees providing wonderful views of the surrounding area.

Unique Architectural Features

This bedroom building is somewhat detached from the main home, but it's accessible through a really sleek glass bridge that allows for full views of the surrounding land. The staircase in the main part of the home is also fully decked out with windows too which brightens up the area that is all created out of darker coloured wood. In the main house, up the stairs is the kitchen and dining area right off of the stairs. The dining area looks out over the property through the floor to ceiling windows that span from wall to wall. The windows even slide open like an accordion which connects the outside to the inside of the home. This would be the perfect place to work or eat, or just sit and have a chat or a long conversation while looking out over the forest. The kitchen is right beside the dining area making it a great place for entertaining or creating homecooked meals. The cabinets are all done in wood keeping the interior really earthy and natural as well as warm and inviting.

Cozy Living Spaces

There's also a great little library area with seating which is a wonderful place to sit and read or look at a magazine , what a great feature for a book lover or collector. There is also a seating area that is located closer to ground level with views of the pristine blue water creating the perfect place to relax and unwind. Plus, there's also a fireplace to keep things cozy and warm. The furniture they brought in is just as impressive as the home itself which is very nice to see. It's easy to see how this home won the NZ Institute of Architects Resene New Zealand Award in 2005 and the NZ Institute of Architects Local Award in 2004. Waterfall Bay was also featured in BBC2 The World's Most Extraordinary Homes: Season 1: Episode 3: Coast if you want to look it up and see the footage of it. This home would be a dream come true for anyone who loves the forest and the sea. The interior is so linked with the outside world which makes this home so wonderful; there is a great view from every single room inside. A very inspirational and unique design that you won't soon forget.
