Reclaimed, hewn timbers often fit as support beams for house awnings, which immediately establish the rustic charm that is so highly prized in many home designs. You can utilize these wood pieces as siding, or create an attractive pergola that serves as the focal point of your outdoor home space. The possibilities are endless. Rough-hewn antique timbers can be reclaimed from old barns and mill buildings that were constructed in the 1800s. They are stunning in their richness of character.

The Labor-Intensive Process of Timber Reclamation

To reclaim the timber, suppliers and/or builders travel to the old mill or barn, strip the building down to its bare bones, then disassemble the frame. Next, the timbers are sorted for size and wood species, all the nails and metal fasteners are removed in a very labor-intensive process and the beams are stocked and ready to be sold. When an order is placed for antique wood, you will need to specify either hand-hewn timber or re-sawn timber. The re-sawn timber is cut with a band saw, it has a beautiful tight grain. The hand-hewn timber comes as is, and it is then scribed to fit into a timber frame.
