Understanding Off-Grid Living

Living off the grid is a lifestyle that does not rely on the support of remote infrastructures, such as the electrical grid, and limits its reliance on one or more public utilities. Traditionally, the term off grid referred to not being connected to the electrical grid, but now it can include several other amenities, such as water, gas, and sewage systems. This is achieved by relying on renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, and energy storage systems such as batteries. Living an off grid lifestyle often means that you are self-sufficient and embody one or more of the following characteristics including producing your electricity, growing your food, raising your livestock, access to fresh water, minimal building, and living outside the city. The following is not a couple of benefits of an off grid lifestyle.

Benefits of Off-Grid Living

Reduce Fossil Fuel Dependence. When you live off the grid, you are no longer consuming fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas for energy, which is a leading contributor to climate change, air pollution, and water pollution. While fossil fuels may still be used for vehicles and equipment (lawnmowers), the amount is still far less than the average household connected to the grid. Food Security. Some people living off the grid have a hobby farm with chickens, cows, other livestock, and a vegetable garden, while others have a vegetable garden. Whereas, if you live off the grid, you are growing fruits and vegetables suitable to your climate, and they do not need to travel to be consumed.

Self-Sufficiency in Off-Grid Living

Self Sufficiency. Today most people are reliant on public utilities. Everything is available in an instant. Most people don't realize how dependent they are on public utilities because they are so readily available. When you live off-grid, you are dependent on yourself because you create your resources and generate your electricity. Therefore, in the event of a blackout or food shortage at the local grocery store, you will not be as affected.
