Wouldn't you love the chance to stay in this geo-dome home in the desert? Owned by a great couple Kathrin and Brian Smirke, the Dome in the Desert is available for rent through Airbnb. So anyone can have the chance to stay in the dreamy vacation home anytime they want. The geo-dome is located in Joshua Tree, California which is a charming village in the desert people flock to for rest and relaxation. Kathrin and Brian wanted a cabin in Joshua Tree, so they made an add on Craigslist. They got a call from someone who had a geodesic dome in Joshua Tree, and they were ecstatic to hear that news. They were able to buy it before it even hit the market, showing that it was meant to be. The couple was living in Los Angeles recently, but they started spending their weekends at Joshua Tree doing the renovations the dome home needed to bring it back to life. They did all the work on the home themselves putting a lot of effort into making the home look more incredible than ever. First off, they got rid of the popcorn ceiling, and they plastered the walls to smooth them out. Compared to the two other properties in Joshua Tree that they've renovated, the dome home was in pretty good shape. But the old 70s style wall panelling, linoleum and carpeting need had to go. They kept the brick but they painted it white to match the white walls, and they restored the beautiful wood burning fireplace.
They also opened up the living space by removing a section of the kitchen and keeping the kitchen along the wall. Now there is space for a cute dining table with chairs and also a small seating area leading out to the patio. This space also has a day bed in it so it can be used as a flexible room to host extra guests. The main bedroom is on the main floor tucked behind the living room for some privacy. There's also a sweet loft area accessed by a ladder with plenty of cozy blankets, rugs and pillows for a lovely lounge area. The couple also had to replace the roof and with that the skylights which was a big expense, but totally worth the splurge because of how great they look and all of the extra light they provide. Kathrin is a natural at interior design and decorated the dome home so beautifully and very stylishly. She mostly found items on Craigslist, and the couple even made some of the furniture and pieces of art throughout the home too. Kathrin is also a stained glass artist, so she has many of her pieces hanging in the windows which adds some nice art and colour to the space.
The bathroom is tucked away in the small cottage and has a shower with a flush toilet and a modern sink and vanity. Guests are also given all of the linens and towels necessary for their stay. Originally, the couple bought the home to have as a vacation home for themselves, but then put it on Airbnb when they weren't using it themselves. The response was overwhelming, and the couple had no idea it would become as popular as it has. They have a huge following on Instagram for the dome home, and it's usually always booked up. Kathrin and Brian have to schedule themselves in if they want to spend a night at it. Guests can stay at The Dome in the Desert for around $240 per night for a vacation they won't forget. This is also a wonderful project to look at and gain some inspiration for building restorations and renovation projects.
