The Evolution of Gatlinburg as a Tourist Destination

It wasn't that long ago that this area was just a small, peaceful community where cornfields and the occasional small business dotted the two-lane highway. Fast forward twenty-five years later to today and the once two-lane highway is now six lanes and is known as the Parkway. A big part of the success of this area as a tourist destination came in 1986 when Dolly Parton gave her name to Dollywood, the theme park that sits on the former Silver Dollar City site. People immediately loved the place, and visitors of all ages continue to visit the entertainment theme park. Today you will find a wide variety of activities to do from hiking to entertainment, restaurants, outlet malls, theaters, craft, gift, and specialty shops, along with local parks, fishing, mini-golf, and more.
