Log cabins are so popular because they connect you with the beauty of nature. When you use handcrafted logs, each log in your log house bears the unique qualities of the tree that it was crafted from to include the knots, the slight imperfections, and the grain of the wood.

If you like the look of rustic log homes, log chinking is another option you might consider when using handcrafted logs. As each handcrafted log is uniquely shaped, log chinking can be added between the logs to provide a seal. If you love the rustic nature of a log cabin design, then visible log chinking can enhance that look.

The amount of labor needed to hand-prepared each log and pre-assemble the entire log home results in significant cost increases over milled logs. For some, these added costs are worth the design flexibility as well as the unique beauty associated with handcrafted logs. However, considering the advances in the fabrication of milled or machine logs, as well as the growing number of log cabin designs and kits available for milled log homes, a more cost-friendly approach does not necessarily represent a sacrifice in style or beauty.
