Cabin building uses building materials that are sustainable and renewable, and you can feel good about your choice. There are more than two dozen species of logs that are commonly used to build wood cabins in North America. Almost all of these are softwoods to include evergreen logs such as fir, pine, spruce, cedar, cypress, and hemlock. Although each wood cabin builder favors certain species of wood, the successful use of so many varieties of logs goes to show that not one type of tree makes a better wood cabin design than another.

Instead, the choice that you make will depend on the type of logs your builder prefers. Despite the many log differences, the various timbers all share some common characteristics. Thermal Benefits of Wood Construction Another reason to love wood cabins is that wood has thermal properties. One of the benefits of logs is in the thermal properties that it possesses. Logs have several thermal properties that help its energy efficiency.

Timber reacts to heat retention and release in a similar way to stone. Think about a large rock that is sitting outside in the summer sun all day. Then as dusk falls and the temperatures begin to cool, bring the rock inside. Depending on the size of the stone, the rock will continue to emit the heat that is absorbed for hours.

Logs work similarly. This is known as thermal mass. Logs will conduct heat more slowly than the other natural building materials. Specific heat is a measurement of a building material's capacity to store the thermal energy. Logs have a high rate of specific heat that is relative to that of brick or concrete, but because it doesn't conduct heat quite as quickly as the other building materials, it tends not to be used for heat storage.
