Choosing from the wide variety of log house designs is just the first step when it comes to starting your log cabin dreams. Just as important as choosing your log house kit is selecting the site where you will build your home cabin kit. Once you have your property, you will then want to take the time and look around your building site. You want to see where the sun comes up on the site, where the lake or the mountainside is about your building site as it will affect things such as the heating, cooling and weather protection requirements of your log house design. A cabin building in the forest will have different moisture-protection needs than that of a log house lot that is perched high on the side of a mountain.

Of course, many people prefer to build in the woods, on a lake or near a ski resort. You might dream of having your cabin building as a log lodge home that is located on the ski slopes, with a scenic view of the ski resort below and the surrounding mountains. You want your log house designs to take advantage of the surrounding views as much as possible. You might try arranging the log cabin designs so that the great room, kitchen, dining room, master bedroom and possibly one guest room have a view. You will also want to keep in mind things such as your lifestyle, whether or not you want to have a formal dining room or an informal eating area.

First, you want to make sure that the building site is actually, buildable. You want to know that nothing about the binding site is going to prevent you from getting a building permit. It always helps to bring along a real estate agent to look at the site with you. If you're buying from an individual, you'll have to do the land research, yourself. You may have a specific vision of the perfect log house that may change once you know the details about the land.
