Ilkley Quarry is the site of the famous Cow and Calf, a large rock formation that consists of an outcrop and boulder, which is also known as the Hangingstone Rocks. The rocks are made of millstone grit, which is a variety of sandstone, and are named because one is large, with a smaller stone sitting close to it, like a cow and calf.

There are multiple ways to do this walk and if you are not careful you can end up scrambling up the rocks and on overgrown alternate paths if you take the wrong course from The Wells cafe with the easier walk being to head up the path behind the back of the cafe not to the side of the cafe. Kids will enjoy this walking tour as there are lots of things that they can interact with and it isn't so long that they may lose interest.
