One of the benefits of shipping container homes is their durability and toughness, which are usually considered to be over-spec when they are turned into tiny house designs. This means that steel containers are more than strong enough to be used as tiny house designs, especially when they are compared to other eco-friendly building materials such as straw bales or recycled plastics. However, to maintain this durability, it is recommended that you don't cut out too much steel from the steel containers.

Removing sections of the steel container walls for doors, windows and room openings will affect the structural integrity of the steel container box itself and require the addition of additional steel beams to help carry the load that was held by the removed metal. Another advantage of building with steel containers is that you can convert the steel containers off-site, This is especially beneficial if you are planning to live in a remote area, where building on-site will come with several challenges. Some of the challenges of building in remote locations are that contractors are difficult to find or expensive to have travel to the building site, shipping your building materials and supplies is expensive, and the availability of electrical power and water necessary for your construction can be limited.

Being able to convert the steel container homes off-site is especially worth looking at if you are considering a remote location build or an off-grid tiny home. With a steel container, you can convert your steel containers at an urban area, and then once the fabrication and modifications are complete, you can then transport your finished tiny house design to your land. Or you can pay a company to help build the shipping container home for you at their factory, then ship you the finished steel container home.

This allows you to live in locations where traditional brick home designs cannot be built. If you intend to live in the remote wilderness, the cost of transporting all of your building materials and paying for building contractors to travel that far may end up being much higher than shipping your finished steel container home to the building site in just one trip. Another advantage of building with steel containers is the environmental benefit.
