The Arizona off-grid life is a lot of work to get set up initially, but in the long run, it's very rewarding. One thing that makes off-grid life a lot easier and more comfortable is solar electric, which is something that you should consider getting in place right away. When you're living completely off the grid as most people do in these areas in Arizona, there are some things to keep in mind as your building a house off the grid and creating your oasis.

The first thing to remember is to keep it all very simple. Design your home around your needs, and begin with your basic needs, heat, water, electricity and food. If you're building a house off the grid in Arizona, you'll also want to position your house so that you get ample sunlight for your solar panels, but so you also get the most shade for those hot desert days. In an off-grid situation, you're going to want to completely avoid electric heat baseboard heaters and clothes drying machines, they take up too much energy and will drain your solar energy.

Doing things the old fashioned way by heating your home on cold nights with a wood fire stove or drying your clothes on a line outdoors can be the best way to go for off grid living. You also shouldn't use an electric air conditioner when you're off the grid. You will want to design your home and build it with proper insulation to keep it cool.

You can look into passive house building which is a very energy efficient method of design. You can also collect your drinking water off your roof and filter it before you drink it. Or, you can have a cistern that will be refilled as needed.

Hauling water into your property is another option, but it can get tiresome after a while. To supplement your solar power, you'll probably also want to have a backup generator to power your home, for those just in case situations. Keeping energy use low in your home is made simple by switching to LED lighting that uses a fraction of the energy that normal iridescent bulbs use. These are just some of the things that you'll want to consider before and while transitioning into an off-grid life.

On the property, there's even a little creek, and it's a bit cooler in the mountainous area with more plant life and shade that other areas of Arizona. The soil may even be good enough to plant some food in, but would probably have to be built up a little bit, adding in some more layers and nutrients. All in all, this 40 acres would make the perfect off-grid homestead for someone who wishes to live out in the desert.
