The top of the log is also left round. A half moon shaped groove is cut into the log along the bottom. This concave groove provides overlapping from one log to the next when the log wall is stacked and gives this log style its name, Swedish Cope. The log corners of a Swedish Cope log home are full saddle notch.

When the corner of the home is viewed, the end of each log is visible. The other common method is butt and pass corners where every other log end is exposed. Swedish Cope log homes only stack with full saddle notch corners.

A Swedish cope log wall is an attractive wall both inside and out, and the log house maintenance that goes with chinking is eliminated. But until recently, log house builders and homeowners have usually found this practical advantage of chinkless log house construction to be more theoretical than actual. This authentic Swedish cope log cabin has chinking between the logs which is part of the aesthetic appeal.

Chinking is similar to caulking though the two techniques are different. Chink is worked into the seams and the creases of the log house for multiple reasons. It is made with fine sand granules and latex polymers.

Unlike caulk that's used for small cracks and crevices, log home chinking can cover much larger spaces up to seven inches and more. Chinking is used in log house construction to protect between the logs and around any crevices. When you chink between the logs, you are actively protecting your log house construction from invaders such as bugs. This is especially important for log homes because when not properly cared for they are susceptible to damage from insects and rodents.
