Since log houses can be a rather big investment, it helps to test a few different cabin building designs before you settle on the one you'll build. If a cabin building design is something you've always dreamed of, there are several ways you can go about achieving this. To start, you will need to plan out the log house details to include budget, building site, and cabin building design. Whether you choose to build the cabin building yourself, buy a wood cabin kit or hire contractors will depend on several factors. Building a cabin building yourself will be one of the biggest projects you will take on, but it is sure also to be one of the most gratifying once the cabin building is complete.

Once you have your cabin building site, you'll need to select your logs and transport the logs to your building site. The type of logs that you use for your wood cabin will depend upon what is available locally, your personal preferences and your log house budget. Many people choose the wood that they can get cheap and local to save on transportation costs. This is a good idea, as you can talk to local loggers, wood mills, land clearing companies, and foresters to find out what tree species are plentiful in your area, and choose the logs that suit your cabin building design. Each log species will have pros and cons in regards to its strength, insulation value, and rot resistance, so you'll want to remember to compare those points when choosing your log species for your cabin build.

If you want to save money and be eco-friendly, you can also consider building your wood cabin with standing dead trees. Standing dead trees make excellent cabin building logs, and there is very little commercial demand for it, so this type of log is often free or very inexpensive. Building your wood cabin with standing dead timber will save you plenty of money, save the logs from being wasted, and save a live green tree from being chopped down for your cabin building. Depending on the type of logs that you use, you will need to treat the wood for your cabin building. Borate wood preservatives are made from naturally occurring minerals that will help prevent rot, fungus, and wood-boring insect infestations.
