So the name Pigeon Forge is a combination of the iron works business that started then and the Little Pigeon River that goes through the charming town. Beech trees lined the Pigeon River's banks in the 1700s and early 1800s. As beechnuts were the main part of the diet of Passenger Pigeons, the river became a natural stopping point for huge flocks of the now-extinct birds. By the 1930s, visitors had begun to start coming into the town, even though the some of the only places to stay were as guests in private log homes.

The iron forge business was still running, and farming was the area's main business. Then in 1946, a landmark sale of the first parcel of property smaller than a farm was negotiated.
