Mobile Office In a Vintage Airstream For a Silicon Valley Entrepreneur
Architects have converted a 1960s travel trailer into an office and crash pad for an on-the-go tech entrepreneur who enjoys spending time in nature. This mobile office provides the ultimate workspace, perfect to enjoy life on the road. The mobile office is just 80 square feet and is known as the Kugelchiff, a renovated Airstream Bambi II that currently serves as a tech entrepreneur's tiny house and office. The client approached the designers hoping to transform a vintage Airstream Bambi II into live-work space, so they set out to rethink how they could take the small package and make it work.

Instead of the project having hard edges and closed boundaries, the elements of the vintage Airstream blend together nicely into one cohesive unit. Some of the details include the top of a backrest that turns into a Corian counter surface, which can also fold down into a seating area, which it fits snugly around a Saarinen Tulip Table. Inside the Airstream renovation, aluminum panels with a white, glossy finish were used to give an almost mirror-like exterior and to complement a basic back palette of warm gray upholstery and white ash flooring. The Airstream is a self-contained retreat that provides a modern, live/work space.

Robert Edmonds of Edmonds + Lee Architects was the designer behind the renovation. The Airstream was nicknamed The Kugelschiff which is German for bullet ship, which suits the silver glistening vintage Airstream. Since the owner of the Airstream works from home and travels between work projects, he wanted to have a mobile space where he could both live and conduct business. He needed a living space that would let him work from home, or anywhere that he needed to be for meetings, and anywhere that he wanted to be for inspiration. He also needed something that was high-tech with connectivity to the Internet and the Cloud, and large enough that a few people could gather when need be.

The Airstream renovation got a modern interior with contemporary technology that could serve each of his needs. The owner searched for a year and finally found the Airstream Bambi II, which is an iconic model that was built in 1964-65. He purchased the Airstream trailer and immediately enlisted Edmonds to help redesign the interior to suit his lifestyle and needs. The Airstream renovation features white-painted, aluminum interior wall panels, along with white ash flooring and cabinetry, and Corian countertops.

The glossy finish of the painted aluminum in the interior helps to minimize any visual clutter and accentuates the natural light on the curved surfaces of both the ceiling and walls. The Airstream renovation is also outfitted with an Eero Saarinen-designed Tulip table, built in bench cushions upholstered with Maharam wool and Charles and Ray Eames-designed chairs. This Airstream is the perfect live/work space for the owner to enjoy a variety of landscapes to include the mountains, desert and the beach. He can get his work done and then at the end of the day relax with a view. The Kugelschiff is the ultimate live/work idea for mobile living and is sure to be an inspiration for anyone who works from home and enjoys travel, and a room with a view.
