In the video, the Off Grid Scout will check out three properties. South from Las Vegas, the drive passes through California for a bit, then back into Arizona. The first location was a bust as the piece of property cuts through some private property, so you don't get to see it. It seems in a location like this the neighbors that you would have would be few and far between and are people who want their privacy. If anything this whole area has wide open spaces and beautiful views.

If solar is something that you wish to use in your house off the grid, there will be an initial cost, to install the renewable energy that will save you plenty of money in the future on your monthly power bill. The amount you save on energy costs from installing solar will differ depending on the state that you live in and the solar power system or energy source you use, but the average monthly savings from solar alone can be around $84. Most solar has a projected lifespan of about 20 years, or more so the savings can add up to over $20,000 in most states. Aside from the lower base cost of solar, you can further cut your monthly energy bill by selling surplus energy back to your local power company via something called net metering.

This will depend on the state that you live, but several states also require that the utility companies produce a regular quota of renewable energy certificates, or RECs, each year, which further offers economic benefits. While you do need to be tied to the main grid system for this sort of method to work, they can be helpful if you're planning on using any local energy source to supplement your power generation. A house of the grid can also offer you flexibility on how you live. Connecting a remote tiny house residence to the electrical power grid can be a major hassle. You will have to jump through all sorts of regulatory hoops and pay anywhere from $5 to $15 per foot of distance from the service pole to your home.

However, the flexibility of having a renewable energy source provides a simpler alternate solution. Renewable energy sources remove your grid dependence entirely. If you don't need to stay connected to the main power grid, you can avoid the long and costly process of getting your piece of property connected to the power grid.
