They're usually made out of real wood, using coals or hot stones to heat the environment within the unit as well as the people inside of it. There are also infrared saunas which are very small, and usually, people put them inside their houses, or within a business promoting health and wellbeing. Neither of the units uses steam as a means of heat, that would be found in a steam room. Instead, the heat in the saunas is quite dry, yet still causes one to sweat, which releases any toxins through the pores.

The sauna goes way back into ancient Finnish culture. Saunas have always been a part of their culture, and it's still very common for Finnish people to have a sauna in their house or on their property. The ancient saunas in Finland were actually cabins that were dug into the sides of cliffs to be used during the cold winters. They called these old saunas, savusaunas, which were essentially smokehouses.

A pile of rocks would be heated up over a consistently burning wood fire for up to 8 hours. Then, the smoke would be allowed to escape the room and people could enjoy the heat for up to 12 hours. The Finnish people brought their sauna designs over to North America as they immigrated, and began to build them here and teach others about them too. Over the years, saunas have become very popular, and we can see them implemented into health centres and used as one of the many natural healing therapies they offer.
