You'll want to take a look inside of this authentic Finnish log cabin located 170 km north of Rovaniemi, in the Levi tourist center, an area called Immel. The log cabin was built in 1991 and renovated later. The log house construction has a kitchen, living room, and 2 bedrooms, both with 1 single bed, a bedroom upstairs (sloping roof) with 3 single size beds, and a loft area with two single beds. The log cabin has a sauna with a wood-burning stove, a shower room/toilet, and a covered porch. The log house has a barbecue hut with an electric light and power socket. There is a lockable (cold) storage for firewood, suitable also for the preservation and maintenance of skis.

The log cabin has electric lighting, electric heating, a shower, a wood-heated sauna, an electric hob and oven, a refrigerator and freezer, a microwave oven, a dishwasher, a washing machine, and a barbecue hut. The small cottage plan has an air-source heat pump (for cooling in summer). The cozy log cottage is located in a quiet area, close to services. The nearest ski slope is Levi racing-slope with a gondola lift 1 km away. The distance to the Levi Center and Spa is 2.2 km. Of course, no Finnish log cabin would be complete without a sauna, and this cabin is no exception with an adorable sauna that is separate from the main log home.

The Cultural Significance of Saunas in Finland

In Finland, you'll find saunas in most homes and cabins with Finland being home to over two million saunas. Saunas are a part of Finnish culture, with the roots of the Finnish sauna going deep into the past, reaching back as far as the Bronze Age. The earliest saunas were most likely simple pits that would have been dug into a slope, with a fireplace where the stones were heated to a high temperature. Water was thrown over the hot stones to generate steam, which provided warmth and a relaxing atmosphere. Over the centuries, the Finnish sauna has evolved, reflecting both the changing times and technologies. From the early pit saunas, the tradition has morphed into smoke saunas which are windowless log cabin buildings with a hearth but no chimney, where the smoke from the burning wood fills the room before escaping through a small hole in the wall or roof.

The Unique Experience of a Smoke Sauna

The smoke sauna is the original sauna, and most Finnish people believe it to be the best kind. The door is closed after the wood has burned down (and most of the smoke has escaped), leaving the embers to heat the sauna to the proper temperature, yielding a soft heat and an aroma of wood smoke. The sauna in Finland is more than just a place for bathing and relaxation. The Finnish sauna is a place for social interaction, and community bonding, and a stage for life's significant events. In Finnish life, the sauna stands as an emblem of national identity, etched deeply into the rhythm of daily routines and social customs. The significance of the sauna is reflected in the staggering numbers that underscore its prevalence and popularity.
