The Eco-Friendly Nature of Log Cabins

When it comes to eco-building, a log cabin is a good way to build green. Eco-building, from the design stage to the construction is the right thing to do, both environmentally, and economically. Using wood in your log house construction helps to create a building that is ecologically sound, aesthetically pleasing, and energy-efficient. Wood that comes from forests that are well managed is a healthy, comfortable build, that has lower energy consumption overall.

Health and Environmental Benefits

A log house also reduces the impact that building has on human health. A log cabin in all the stages from site selections, log house construction, maintenance, and demolition is better for the environment. A log cabin is a natural and easy way to make a difference in the environment. Logs are a building material that helps to reduce greenhouse gases and store carbon. A healthy sustainable forest is a readily available solution to climate change. An acre of healthy growing trees can help to absorb about three tons of carbon dioxide and releases approximately two tons of oxygen. As the tree ages and the growth slows, fewer carbons are absorbed from the atmosphere.

Sustainable Forest Management

When you build a log cabin building that uses building materials that come from sustainably managed forests, is just another step to ensuring an eco-building. Sustainable forest management keeps the balance between three main pillars to include ecological, economic, and socio-cultural. Sustainably managed forests help to provide integrated benefits to everyone, ranging from safeguarding local livelihoods to helping to protect the biodiversity and ecosystems provided by forests. Sustainably managed forests also help to reduce rural poverty and mitigating some of the effects of climate change.

Benefits of Using Wood in Construction

There are other benefits to using wood building products in your log cabin. Wood building materials need the least amount of energy to manufacture and therefore have the lowest impact on both air and water quality. Wood is a natural building material, so it does not have any of the toxic by-products that are typically associated with other building materials when being manufactured. Wood is the only major building material that is a renewable resource. It is believed that about one-third of the energy in North America is used to help heat, cool, and operate buildings.
