Historical Context and Growth of Gatlinburg

It wasn't all that long ago that this area was just a small, sleepy community where cornfields and the occasional small business dotted the two-lane highway. Fast forward to today and the once two-lane highway is now six lanes and is known as the Parkway. A big part of the success of this area as a tourist destination came in 1986 when Dolly Parton gave her name to Dollywood the now-famous theme park. Today you will find a wide variety of activities to do from theaters, restaurants, entertainment to hiking outlet malls, craft, gift, and specialty shops, along with fishing, local parks, mini-golf, and more.
