Benefits of Red Cedar in Log Home Design

When it comes to wood cabins and log home designs, red cedar is a popular choice of wood to use. There are several benefits to building with red cedar, and its unsurpassed natural beauty is just one reason. Aesthetically, red cedar is a naturally stunning building material that has deep, tonal properties that help to accentuate the richly textured wood grains and the exposed heartwood. People have been using red cedar for hundreds of years, and it's no wonder with its proven performance. It is a wood that is environmentally friendly, naturally resistant to both decay and insects.

Versatile Finishes for Red Cedar

Red cedar used in log houses accepts a wide variety of finishes. And the best part about building with wood is that it comes from renewable resources. Red cedar is both pitch and resin-free, which means that this wood can hold a variety of finishes to include semi-transparent stains, shabby chic bleaches, traditional solid colors, naturally beautiful semi-transparent, and elegant dark stains. It is also incredibly durable and will prove to keep your log house construction attractive for years to come.

The Historical Significance of Red Cedar

Red cedar is a building material that has a long history of proven performance. For centuries, Western Red Cedar is the wood that has long been celebrated by the Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations as the Tree of Life, and it has been used to help build longhouses, totem poles, and canoes. Hundreds of years later and red cedar continues to be a preferred building material for log cabin building.

Thermal Performance of Red Cedar

Red cedar also has an extremely high thermal coefficient. Red cedar is a wood that outperforms other softwoods as well as bricks, concrete, and steel in terms of its thermal insulation and its sound control. That means log house constructions will insulate better in the winter but remain cooler in the warm summer months. And red cedar has a natural resistance to heat loss, with radiant comfort from its thermal mass and reduced energy consumption because of the high quality of this natural building material. Red cedar is known for being an excellent thermal insulator, keeping your house cool in the summer and warmer in the winter. These factors along with many others are what contribute to an outstanding log house design that is environmentally friendly.
