Inspired by a Dream

Take a look at this video that showcases a 17-year-old living in Stockholm, Sweden who after seeing the documentary "Alone in the Wilderness" by Dick Proenneke, became completely obsessed with the idea of just packing a rucksack of hand tools and wandering off into the vast forest of Sweden to create his own life, living off the land and building a log cabin. Still, in high school, his grandparents owned a forest so he started spending more and more time with them every weekend, wandering out, dreaming of his obsession, and asking for advice. The log cabin builder had no prior knowledge of log house construction just the obsession to learn. After turning 18 he told everyone of his plans, and received a GoPro camera from his parents, so he could at least film some of his adventures. He hadn't even thought about filming anything but is so glad he did.

The Journey of Hardship and Growth

It is a long story of hard work, pain, cold, making many many mistakes, and figuring out how to solve problems all alone by trial and error. But finally, after 3 years, a log cabin is built. Along the way, the builder also became passionate about filmmaking, so he invested in a better camera. The whole journey is filmed on a tripod by himself, which proved to be a struggle. You will be impressed at the craftsmanship of the log cabin and will love the solitude that is expressed in the video with plenty of nature shots to inspire you for a log cabin build of your own. The log house construction is off-grid which is also an appealing part of the log cabin lifestyle, that many people choose. There are several advantages of off-grid living including some of the following.

Benefits of Off-Grid Living

Save money. Although the initial cost of setting up your off-grid cabin or household may be expensive, once you have invested in this, you will save money as you will have fewer costs associated with utility bills, food, and general consumption. In the case of the log cabin builder in the video, they were fortunate enough to have use of their grandparent's property where they could get the logs and building site needed for their log cabin building. Connect with nature. Off-the-grid living means you are immersed in nature and away from the stresses of everyday modern life. Studies show that spending just 120 minutes a week in nature can help to improve health and well-being. With off-grid living, you are surrounded by nature all of the time.

The Freedom and Self-Sufficiency of Off-Grid Living

Freedom. Living off the grid means you are away from strict building controls and permitting regulations, so you have more freedom in how you'd like to build your log home. Improved self-sufficiency. You grow your food and harvest your energy from natural resources that are available to you. If you compost, this is another great way that makes off-grid living sustainable. By composting you help to save soil, and water, and reduce waste. Sustainable lifestyle. Using renewable energy to power your log cabin and growing your food means you contribute less to the throwaway culture of society today.
