Steeped in history, the Pigeon Forge area of Tennesee has lots of stories to tell. One of the first businesses in the East Tennessee town was a furnace and iron forge. This area once wilderness has carved itself out into the successful business community that it is today. The land that surrounds what is Pigeon Forge today was once the hunting grounds of the Cherokee and other eastern tribes of the American Indians. In the late 1700s, a treaty was signed that opened up the valley for settlement. In 1820, a man named Isaac Love started a furnace and iron forge, becoming the community's first business. So the name Pigeon Forge is a combination of the iron works business that started then and the Little Pigeon River that goes through the charming town. Beech trees lined the Pigeon River's banks in the 1700s and early 1800s. As beechnuts were the main part of the diet of Passenger Pigeons, the river became a natural stopping point for huge flocks of the now-extinct birds.

By the 1930s, visitors had begun to start coming into the town, even though the some of the only places to stay were as guests in private log homes.

The iron forge business was still running, and farming was the area's main business. Then in 1946, a landmark sale of the first parcel of property smaller than a farm was negotiated. So it was during that time that the main road through Pigeon Forge, which ran along the Pigeon River, became the hub of the community, that had just two general stores and two churches. Today there is so much to see and do. One of the biggest lures to the area is the Great Smoky Mountains, National Park.
