Newbury is the largest town in West Berkshire, forming a pair with Thatcham on the River Kennet by the North Wessex Downs. This is the location of the United Kingdom headquarters of Vodafone and a couple of other high-tech firms that are based in Newbury, and the town’s business acumen has a long history. In the 16th century, the cloth trade was in full swing in Newbury, and the popular cloth merchant Jack O’Newbury built the hall that now holds the town museum. Later, Newbury became the inland port on the Kennet and Avon Canal, which is still an integral part of the townscape at the Wharf and Victoria Park. Highclere Castle which is known as Downton Abbey from the popular television show is just a few minutes from the center of town and a tourist attraction you won't want to miss if you enjoy the show.
Highclere Castle has been the country seat of the Earls of Carnarvon since 1679, and most of the architectural design dates to the turn of the 1840s. The castle is in the Jacobethan style, which is a revival of 16th and 17th-century forms. Earlier, the leading 18th-century landscape architect Capability Brown laid out the castle's gardens.
In the summer months and on selected dates during the rest of the year, you can catch a glimpse of the lives of the fictional Crawley family, by visiting the filming locations both inside and outside, on a tour through the dining room, great hall, library, drawing room, music room, saloon, and bedrooms. You can also witness a collection of Egyptology that was brought here following the 5th earl’s participation in digs such as the Tomb of Tutankhamen in 1922.
