The castle has a 5 story tower, with a cap house and pedimented panel, abutting a dormered two-story (plus an attic) chateau-styled residence with a balustrade terrace and curved stairs descending to the gardens. There is a castellated two-story turret house that completes the eastern side of the castle. The castle entrance is through a segmented-headed doorway in a projected squared porch in the gabled north elevation. The castle was constructed in red sandstone by Sydney Mitchell between 1898 and 1902, replacing the earlier house of Charles Duneill Rudd. The style of the castle is Scots Renaissance, with detailed ornamentation on the woodwork, stonework, and glazing which adds to its decorative and Jacobean appeal.
Other buildings on the site include former stables of bull-faced rubble with ashlar dressing and an impressive lodge house, in the Arts and Crafts Scots free style tradition.
