Country Log Cabin in Virginia Gets a Makeover

This rustic log cabin located in Front Royal, Virginia was transformed from a tired old stucco home into the rustic cabin building you see today.

The renovation is located on a 1500-acre parcel near Front Royal, Virginia, with the owners wanting a cozy retreat for guests. The owners envisioned something that would reflect their German heritage in the form of an old hunting wood cabin. The existing home on the property was in disrepair. Shop Tiny Homes The white stucco on the exterior of the cabin was cracked in several places, and the green standing seam roof was leaking and rusty. The interior of the cabin building wasn't much better and needed a total renovation.

For this cabin building renovation, the exterior got a new stone foundation, windows, siding, roof and chimney.

To give the cabin building a rustic look and feel they wrapped three sides of the cabin building with reclaimed, hand-hewn log beams and traditional chinking. The upper level of the cabin was finished with vertically applied cedar boards. The cedar posts on the front and back porches are naturally finished to give the cabin building an added sense of character and authenticity. The cabin building has red-clad windows and trim that add a certain richness and compliment the rustic finishes.

Inside the rustic cabin building, the floors were refinished, and the ceiling features exposed wood beams.

All of the baseboards, window and door trim are clear finished knotty pine along with the built-in bookcase and newel post at the base of the stairs. The fireplace in the cabin building is clad in stone that matches the foundation and chimney on the exterior. The use of wood and stone throughout the interior help to create a rich and inviting space and is exactly what you'd expect when entering a log cabin. Though most of the interior layout remained the same, there is no visible evidence of the previous dwelling. Upon entering the cabin building, most people assume that it has always been a rustic cabin building.

You can even find bed frames that are made of rough-hewn wood to bring the wood cabin feel to your bedroom. For upholstered furniture such as sofas and chairs, leather is always a good look. Natural materials such as flannel and wool also work well with wood cabin decor. When it comes to accessories for your wood cabin, antique pieces always work for that log cabin feel. In the kitchen, you might display cast iron cookware or blue and white enamel pottery to add some rustic appeal. Stoneware pieces, to include pots and pitchers, make ideal displays throughout the house. For lighting, opt for fixtures that resemble lanterns or kerosene lamps. Artwork that features wildlife, such as bears, deer, and ducks, can also lend an air of authenticity to the look.
